San Diego County officials said they don't know when they will have the funds to restart coastal water quality monitoring.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the routine testing fell by the wayside in October 2008, when the county lost state funding.

It is unclear when-and even if-the state payments for the program will begin again.

With the start of California's peak beach-going season just over a month away, Heal the Bay officials said surfers and swimmers would be entering the water at their own risk.
