SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Fourth of July marshmallow fight in Ocean Beach is officially canceled.

After this summer's celebration, the beach and streets were littered with marshmallows and trash and sidewalks were covered with a sticky coating.

Residents complained that the annual event is out of control and children and adults are getting hurt.

Wednesday night the Ocean Beach Town Council voted to ban the marshmallow fight.

"Over time the hope is that the marshmallow war starts to taper off and goes away and that people can enjoy the Fourth of 4th of July without worrying about having a marshmallow thrown at their head," said Dave Cieslak with the Ocean Beach Town Council.

The council will work with the city to announce that next year's fight is canceled.
