SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 26-year-old man was fatally injured after he crashed his car while trying to evade a pursuing California Highway Patrol officer in the Core-Columbia area of San Diego, a police officer said.

The incident began with minor hit-and-run accident on First Avenue about 10:25 p.m., Friday, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.

The driver fled heading the wrong way on Cedar Street, Heims said. A CHP officer driving on Cedar spotted the wrong-way driver and gave chase. The driver then made a U-turn in front of the CHP officer and turned onto Juniper Street.

The driver finally slammed his car into a retaining wall at 2330 First Ave., Heims continued. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
