Owner helps police find her stolen Tesla using app

A stolen Tesla is returned after being tracked using a GPS app. Thieves led police on a wild chase and the owner watched from her iPhone.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A stolen Tesla is returned after being tracked using a GPS app.

Thieves led police on a wild chase and the owner watched from her iPhone. She was leaving a friend's house in La Jolla when she noticed her Tesla was missing.

She used the automaker's app to track the car to an apartment complex and called police.

The thieves led officers on a high speed chase on Interstate 5 to Pacific Beach.

"So we followed the navigation again and we came to this point and we saw that the car is here, all the cops are here, the helicopter is here…the navigation definitely did an amazing job,” said the owner of the Tesla, Shahin Pirani.

The car was eventually stopped by spike strips. Both the driver and passenger tried to make a run for it, and the passenger jumped over a guard rail and fell into a riverbed. He was transported to the hospital. The driver was then arrested.
