SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego police Friday were investigating an officer-involved shooting in Hillcrest in which a burglary suspect was wounded when he allegedly advanced towards officers with a large knife.
Officers were called to a business complex in the 3300 block of Third Avenue near Thorn Street at 10:12 p.m. Thursday by someone inside the building who heard glass break and suspected a break-in was in progress, according to San Diego police Lt. Ernie Herbert.
When officers arrived, they found the front windows of a dental office has been broken and saw the burglary suspect attempting to carry property out of the office through the broken windows, Herbert said.
Officers ordered the suspect to stop but he refused and advanced towards officers with a large knife, at which time he was shot by one of the officers, Herbert said. The wounded suspect then collapsed and paramedics were called.
Paramedics took the suspect to a local hospital. The extent of his injury was not reported early Friday.
He appeared to be 25-30 years old, but he was not positively identified, Herbert said.
The officer who shot the suspect is a three-year veteran of the department.
