Police: Man shoots Escondido police cars in chase

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a suspect fired shots at police and a sheriff's helicopter in San Diego County as he fled officers in a car that had been reported stolen.

Escondido police Lt. Craig Carter says the 26-year-old suspect hit four police cars, but no one was injured.

The man, whose name has not been released, was under arrest Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder and many other charges.

Carter says police pulled over the suspect in a Honda Accord at about 6 p.m. Friday, and he fled just as officers learned the car was stolen.

One bullet went through the windshield of a police K-9 vehicle pierced an officer's shirt and lodged in the front seat.

Carter says officers did not fire back.

The man was stopped and arrested in a mall parking lot about 15 minutes after the chase began.
