San Diego County Supervisors unveil new mobile air monitoring quality plan

Fletcher and Cox discuss the county's new mobile air monitoring vehicle and air quality monitors, which will be placed in the county's Portside area.

SAN DIEGO — County Supervisors Greg Cox and Nathan Fletcher unveiled the county's plans Friday to monitor ground-level air pollution in areas with poor air quality.

Fletcher and Cox held a news conference to discuss the county's new mobile air monitoring vehicle and air quality monitors, which will be placed in the county's Portside area, composed of Barrio Logan, Logan Heights, Sherman Heights and sections of National City. The two supervisors detailed the air monitoring vehicle's route and where air quality monitors will be placed throughout the Portside area.

In March, the California Air Resources Board chose San Diego County as one of 10 regions across the state to participate in its Community Air Protection Program, which focuses on areas that are at a higher risk for polluted air due to nearby ports, freeways and industrialization.

CARB awarded the county $2.5 million to begin monitoring air quality in the affected areas. The county has been using the funds to collect air quality data in March at Sherman Heights Elementary School.
