Pollution warning at Del Mar beach after sewage spill

A spill of about 1,000 gallons of sewage fouled a stretch of North County ocean coastline Friday.

DEL MAR (CNS) - A spill of about 1,000 gallons of sewage fouled a stretch of North County ocean coastline Friday.

A blockage in a sanitation line began sending wastewater overflowing on Eighth Street in Del Mar shortly before 3 p.m., according to the county Department of Environmental Health. It took city crews about two hours to get the problem under control, the DEH reported.

Signs warning of pollution hazards were posted along a nearby stretch of beach. The contamination alert will remain in effect until follow-up testing deems the area safe for human contact.
