Police said a man who allegedly abducted his estranged wife and 18-month-old son after running over a romantic rival in Pomona remained at large Sunday, but his son and wife were safe.

Francisco Rodriguez, 30, is accused of driving over Jose Chavez, 33, about 7:45 p.m. Saturday at a crosswalk on Huntington Street south of Third Street, and driving off with his wife, Consuelo Gonzales, 30, and son Alexis, said Pomona police Sgt. Christian Hsu.

Chavez, who was apparently involved with Rodriguez's wife, was airlifted to a hospital and was in grave condition with a head injury, he said.

The abduction prompted an Amber Alert, but Rodriguez's SUV was found Sunday morning, and his wife and son were found safe, said Officer M. Brannon of the Pomona Police Department.

Rodriguez may be headed to Mexico, police said. He is Hispanic, about 5 feet 8 inches and 170 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Police urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to call (909) 622-1241.
