Hundreds of teachers, parents and students attended a meeting Monday night and held a rally in opposition to potential budget cuts in the Sweetwater Union High School District.
The District has an $11.6 million deficit for the upcoming school year. Counselors and art teachers voiced the most concern at the meeting, fearing they are most vulnerable to possible cuts. The District is asking for volunteers to take early retirement. A spokesperson said layoffs might be avoided if up to 150 teachers took the early retirement plan.
No final decisions were made at the meeting Monday night, which was attended by a standing-room-only crowd. Teachers interested in the early retirement plan have until March 30th to apply.
