Residential development proposed instead of Scripps Ranch Wal-Mart

Plans for a controversial new Wal-mart in Scripps Ranch have been scrapped, and alternative plans for an upscale residential/retail complex were unveiled Tuesday night.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Plans for a controversial new Wal-Mart in Scripps Ranch have been scrapped, and alternative plans for an upscale residential-retail complex were unveiled Tuesday night.

The new vision for a dilapidated industrial area along Canyon Carroll Road near I-15, which is currently owned by a local church, would include up to 265 units of luxury apartment housing and 13,000 square feet of retail, including cafes, restaurants and smaller stores.

Residents of Scripps Ranch had galvanized in strong opposition to the original concept of a big-box store in their backyard. Tuesday night, most residents at the Scripps Ranch Civic Association meeting appeared open to the idea of a residential-retail development in its place.

The San Diego City Council would first have to approve the project. If ultimately given the green light, it would be three years or more before this new development would be completed.
