Across the country, and here in San Diego County, thousands of same-sex couples are planning to apply for marriage licenses - expecting to be denied.
Today's futile attempt will serve a purpose: to protest court and voter decisions restricting legal matrimony to opposite-sex couples. This week marks the 12th annual Freedom to Marry Week, overlapping with Valentine's Day.
The protests come in the wake of California's Proposition 8 vote - which overturned same-sex marriages.
Activists have geared up for rallies at marriage bureaus or county clerks' offices in communities large and small. Locally, same-sex couples will request marriage licenses at the County Clerk's office in San Marcos from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m.
The future of Prop 8 is currently being challenged in court.
