BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (CBS 8) - An investigation is underway after Sheriff's Deputies fatally shot a motorist Wednesday following a short pursuit over back-country roads on the Barona Reservation.

The pursuit began when the suspect, who reportedly had been driving recklessly through the area, refused to yield to deputies, according to sheriff's spokesman Ryan Keim.

"Tribal enforcement contacted him for trespassing initially and reckless driving on the reservation," said Keim.

Authorities eventually located the suspect, but were led on a short chase.

"The suspect exited his vehicle, was extremely uncooperative with officers. In an attempt to keep the suspect from re-entering his vehicle, deputies used multiple less lethal bean bag rounds and stop sticks," said Keim.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the gunfire. The suspect, a man whose identity was not immediately available, died at the scene.

Two other people injured in a crash that occurred during the chase were taken to hospitals, according to Keim. Their conditions were not released.

"It's a very complex investigation. We are just now in the very preliminary stages of it, but we want to remind the community if anybody saw anything or anybody has any information, please call the Sheriff's Department," said Keim.
