San Diego Police Department implements recommendations to fight misconduct

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's police chief said Wednesday the department has implemented 21 of 40 recommendations that came out of a federal investigation into policies and practices meant to prevent officer misconduct.

Two of those recommendations were completed in just the past couple of weeks, Chief Shelley Zimmerman told the San Diego City Council's Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee.

The other suggestions are in the process of being implemented, she said.

Among the improvements, Zimmerman said an academy class that begins next month will have 50 recruits, the largest in seven years, with 60 percent being minorities and/or women.

Councilman Chris Cate said the diversity in the class was "heartening."
