SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - Multiple fire agencies responded to Zomarano Elementary School in Bay Terraces Thursday after students reported feeling nauseous from odor coming from sewer equipment.

One student was transported to an area hospital for observation and some others were treated by a nurse on campus, according to SDFD. The odor, which came from a sewer system project on campus being worked on by the City of San Diego, affected 36 kids total.

San Diego Public Works Department Public Information Officer Alex Phillip said that the smell likely came from a non-hazardous styrenated resin used during the project.

SDFD said that Initial reports of illness came from students at recess and as time went on, students who were indoors at the time also reported feeling sick.

School officials notified parents of sick kids individually and gave all parents the option to take their kids home if they wanted. Students who stayed were held until normal school release time.

Hazmat crews responded to the incident and found nothing hazardous.
