ENCINITAS (CNS) - A 19-year-old man arrested in a failed attempt to rob an Encinitas Rite-Aid of Oxycontin was behind bars Sunday.

Alan Buckley walked into the store at 439 Santa Fe Drive about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, and tried to shield his face from surveillance cameras with a hood and a hand, Encinitas police Sgt. William Dreyer said.

"The other hand was inside his sweatshirt pocket, simulating he had a weapon," Dreyer said. "He told the pharmacy employees it was a robbery, and he demanded Oxycontin."

Someone called 911, and deputies surrounded the store, as customers and employees were evacuated.

Buckley eventually came out of the store and surrendered, Dreyer said. Oxycontin, a synthetic opiate prescribed to dull pain, is a popularly abused drug often diverted for black market sales.
