LA MESA (CNS) - A 22-year-old man was behind bars Sunday for allegedly attempting to rob a teenager riding his skateboard in La Mesa.
Walter Barrios of La Mesa was arrested at 8:40 p.m. Saturday on suspicion of attempted robbery and brandishing a deadly weapon.
The incident took place about 6 p.m. Saturday on Dallas Street near Amarillo Avenue. The 15-year-old victim told officers he was riding his skateboard on the sidewalk when a man holding a large hunting knife approached him. The man pointed the knife at the boy and demanded property, La Mesa police Sgt. Bret Richards said.
The suspect ran into the house on Dallas Street when the victim refused to give up his property. The teenager told his father and brother about the robbery, Richards said.
The victim's father confronted the robber, who was now armed with a pocket knife. The father left the house and contacted police for assistance, he said.
When officers arrived, the suspect ran from the back yard and was eventually cornered on the neighbor's roof. After several minutes of negotiation, he came down from the roof and was taken into custody.
Barrios was scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the El Cajon courthouse. Bail was $100,000, according to the jail website.
