Teens Lead Wild Road Chase Before Crash, Arrests In Spring Valley

Two teenagers suspected of stealing a can of beer from an East County convenience store and making their getaway in a stolen car were arrested today after a wild road chase that ended in a crash, authorities said.

The petty theft at the 7-Eleven at Paradise Valley Road and South Washington Street in Spring Valley was reported shortly after 12:30 p.m., sheriff's Sgt. Greg Hampton said.

When a patrol deputy spotted the getaway car a few miles to the north, at Troy Street and Sweetwater Road, the driver refused to yield, Hampton said.

During the ensuing pursuit, the fleeing driver ran "numerous" stop signs and red lights before losing control of the vehicle, which veered up an embankment and overturned before rolling back onto its wheels and lurching to a halt, the sergeant said.

The driver was arrested at the scene. The passenger ran off but was taken into custody a short distance away.

The suspects, both of them minors with outstanding arrest warrants, showed no visible signs of injury but complained of pain, according to Hampton.

They were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital for evaluations before being booked into juvenile hall.

A computer check revealed that the vehicle the youths were in had been reported stolen.

The suspects' names were withheld because they are minors.
