SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A Texas bartender is cycling across America to raise awareness for animal shelters and pet adoption.

CBS News 8's Jeff Zevely shares the story of man's best friend on the back of a bike on the open road.

39-year old Mike Minnick and his 5-year old rescue dog Bixby have emBARKed on an epic adventure bicycling around the country and raising awareness for the importance of pet adoption and supporting your local animal shelters.

Two years ago, Mike and Bixby hopped on a bike and decided to travel across the country.

They have now pedaled over 9,000 miles through 31 states and are having the adventure of a lifetime. Along the way, they are meeting lots of people and helping to unite other 4 legged friends with humans.

So look out, and you may just see them pedaling through your town. The human-doggy duo will leave Oceanside in a few days and head south through all of San Diego County's beach towns.

Mike and Bixby stay with people who support and follow them on social media. Mike hasn't decided when their journey will end.
