WASHINGTON — Visitors to the National Mall spotted something slightly unusual
Friday morning -- a vast display of red robes and white bonnets formed in front of the Washington Monument.

Not to be confused for protesters who have worn similar costumes -- underneath these robes were the cast members of Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale."

The television show centered around a woman named Offred who is forced to survive in a totalitarian society, according to the show's imdb page. The show is based off the dystopian novel written by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. In both the book and the TV series, women are treated as second-class citizens and many are forced into sexual servitude as "handmaids."

The iconic red robes seen on the Mall are the uniforms for handmaids designed to hide their faces and bodies.

Many feminist-based movements have worn the handmaid costume during major protests such as this Planned Parenthood protest group photo taken back in 2017.

"The Handmaid's Tale" released the trailer for Season 3 of the show during the Superbowl showing the maids swarming the Mall with a shot of a cross shaped Monument near the Reflecting Pool.

Season 3 premieres June 5th according to Hulu.
