A theft suspect led deputies on a road chase through several East County communities today before crashing the car he was driving and making a failed bid to escape on foot, a sheriff's official reported.
The non-injury pursuit started shortly after 10:30 a.m. in the 12400 block of Woodside Avenue in Lakeside, Lt. Mike McClain said.
The suspect, who was driving a white Chrysler PT Cruiser, sped off to the south on Winter Gardens Boulevard, according to McClain.
After entering nearby El Cajon, the fleeing man turned onto Second Street, then entered Interstate 8 and drove to the west for several miles before exiting the freeway at Severin Drive in La Mesa, the lieutenant said.
He then headed north, re-entered El Cajon, turned onto Fletcher Parkway and continued to the east for about a mile.
Near Cuyamaca Street, the suspect lost control of the car, which veered off the roadway and crashed to a stop against a utility pole. The man then jumped out and ran off, McClain said.
A short distance away, a service dog pulled him to the ground, and deputies took him into custody.
The suspect's name and details on the alleged crime that prompted the pursuit were not immediately available.
