A woman accused with her husband of molesting four children at the San Diego-based day care center they operated out of their apartment pleaded not guilty today to eight felony charges, including child abuse.
Anita Maria Kaczmarczyk, who remains in custody with bail set at $150,000, faces 60 years to life in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Lucy Weismantel.
Her 58-year-old husband, Mark Lee Kaczmarczyk, was arrested last Sunday in Taiwan and is awaiting extradition to San Diego, the prosecutor said.
An investigation was launched after vaginal injuries were discovered in September 2007 on one of the alleged victims, who ranged in age from a few months old to just over 2 years old, Weismantel told reporters.
The prosecution alleges the children were molested between June and September of 2007.
Besides child abuse, the defendants are charged with four counts of committing lewd and lascivious acts on a child and a sentence-enhancing allegation of multiple victims, Weismantel said.
Judge David Szumowski set a Feb. 25 readiness conference and a March 4 preliminary hearing for Anita Kaczmarczyk.
Her husband was arrested after a female Taiwanese agent worked undercover to gain his confidence and found out where he lived, the Taipei Times reported.
The suspect reportedly told clerks at a shop he frequented that he wanted to open an English-language kindergarten in Taiwan.
