A 63-year-old man who was trashing a Talmadge-area apartment today was arrested and his wife was found dead inside the residence, a police lieutenant said.

Neighbors complained about a rampaging man about 5:30 a.m. in the 4400 block of 47th Street, said San Diego police homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney.

"Officers arrived to find the second-story windows of an apartment completely shattered, with a number of personal items strewn on the ground below," Rooney said.

The man then walked out of the residence, approached the officers with clenched fists and made some unintelligible comments, Rooney said.

"The suspect ignored their commands to stop and continued towards them," the lieutenant said. "In quick succession, pepper spray, beanbag-shotgun rounds, a Taser and physical force were used to subdue the suspect."

After restraining the man, officers went into the apartment and found the woman's body.

The man, whose name was withheld pending notification of his wife's relatives, was taken to a trauma center, where he underwent surgery for injuries sustained during his arrest, Rooney said.

Once he is released from the hospital, he will be booked into county jail on suspicion of murder, the lieutenant said.
