Woman found floating near Scripps Pier ID'd

LA JOLLA SHORES (CNS) - A 19-year-old Spring Valley woman was publicly identified Sunday as the person found dead off the Scripps Pier Saturday.

Alyssa Collette Pezzoli was spotted lifeless in the Pacific Ocean, about 100 yards northwest of the tip of the pier, and reported to lifeguards about 12:20 p.m. Saturday.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office released her name Sunday, but did not specify a cause of death. UC San Diego campus police are handling the death investigation, and have not indicated how the death may have happened.

On Saturday, city lifeguard officials said it was unclear how long the body had been in the water.

Lifeguards recovered the corpse and brought it to the beach at the base of the pier Saturday afternoon. UCSD police were summoned for the investigation into Pezzoli's death, the Medical Examiner's Office reported, but it was not clear Sunday if the campus police remain in charge of the death investigation.

LA JOLLA SHORES (CNS) - An unidentified woman's corpse was found floating Saturday in the Pacific Ocean just off the Scripps Pier.

The body was that of a white woman who was approximately between 18 and 28 years old, according to coroners at the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, who were called to take possession of the body.

Her identification was pending fingerprint comparison, the Medical Examiner's Office reported.

A person spotted the body about 100 yards northwest of the tip of the pier and reported it to lifeguards about 12:20 p.m. San Diego lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum said. It was unclear how long the body had been in the water.

"There was rigor mortis that had set in, so it had been some time. We don't know exactly how much," Lerum said.

Lifeguards recovered the corpse and brought it to the beach at the base of the pier, he said. Police personnel from UC San Diego were summoned for the investigation into the woman's death.
