'Dude! Be cool. Don't dump.' | Project Clean Water launches campaign to protect water quality in San Diego

The campaign is aimed at raising awareness about what dumping is and the positive impacts properly disposing of waste has on our communities.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — A San Diego county-wide initiative is aiming to protect water quality in our region. It's called "Dude! Be cool. Don't dump."

The public education campaign by "Project Clean Water" is aimed at raising awareness about what dumping is and the positive impacts properly disposing of waste has on our communities.

"Project Clean Water" partnered with "I Love A Clean San Diego" to address barriers and provide a centralized point of access with information about dumping, where to take unwanted items and alternative options to getting rid of waste.

The organization says the dumping of unwanted items, such as furniture, appliances and trash on public and private property, is a big problem in San Diego and has negative impacts on our environment and waterways.

"A clean San Diego means clean water and the small everyday actions that we make have big impacts in our communities. So, be cool and don't dump!" said Chris Helmer, City of Imperial Beach Environmental and Natural Resources Director.

These items break down and release harmful chemicals and other pollutants which can contaminate water entering storm drains. The items also can create blockages of drainage channels leading to flooding in our neighborhoods.
