SAN DIEGO — What were you doing when you were 14-years-old and a freshman in high school? Probably not winning America’s Top Young Scientist award!

That is exactly what Westview High School freshman, Kara Fan did. Fan beat out nine other competitors for the award and received $25k along with the opportunity to go to NYC to ring the NYSE closing bell.

Kara’s invention was a first aid liquid bandage using nano-silver technology to reduce the risk of superbug infections caused by antibiotic overuse. She specially formulated the bandage to replace he use of more commonly used over-the-counter antibiotics ointments and first aid treatments. With her invention, Kara hopes to reduce the number of incidents related to drug-resistant infections.

Kara Fan joined Morning Extra to talk about her invention and how she came up with the idea.
