San Diego County gas prices rise again

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline has risen 20 consecutive days and 26 of the past 27, increasing 49.2 cents, according to figures from the AAA and OPIS.

SAN DIEGO — The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County rose 3.9 cents on Sunday to $3.814, its highest amount since Oct. 29, one day after increasing 4.3 cents.

The recent sharp increases are the result of a series of refinery issues that have reduced supply, according to Jeffrey Spring, the Automobile Club of Southern California's corporate communications manager.

"Refineries in Wilmington and Carson reported unplanned flaring as a result of breakdowns last weekend, according to Oil Price Information Service," Spring said.

"OPIS also reports that operations have not yet recovered for Phillips 66 after the March 16 fire at the company's Carson refinery. Some Northern California and Pacific Northwest refineries are dealing with planned and unplanned maintenance also, making for a tight gasoline supply throughout the West Coast."

The average price has risen 20 consecutive days and 26 of the past 27, increasing 49.2 cents, according to figures from the AAA and OPIS. It is 19.4 cents more than one week ago, 50.1 cents higher than one month ago and 26.1 cents greater than one year ago.

GasBuddy.com predicts gas in California could hit $4 a gallon within the next two weeks. The last time we hit that was in 2014.

AAA has not made a prediction as far as hitting the $4 mark. They believe increases won't affect summer travel plans.

Last year, a record 46.9 million Americans traveled for Fourth of July; a trend AAA believes will continue this year.
