All lanes reopen after suspect shoots himself, ending standoff with police near Camp Pendleton

San Diego Police Department's Watch Commander told News 8 that the suspect shot himself just before 6:20 a.m.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — All lanes of Interstate 5 near Cristianitos are open after they were closed for hours due to a police standoff.

San Diego Police Department's Watch Commander told News 8 that the suspect may have shot himself just before 6:20 a.m. The Watch Commander says the condition of the suspect is unknown at this time.  

On Tuesday night a naked woman flagged down police in the 3600 block of Central Avenue in City Heights. The woman told the police that she had been assaulted by her boyfriend. According to police, there was evidence the woman had been strangled. The woman provided police with a description of the car the man was driving.

After 1 a.m. on Wednesday morning, police spotted a vehicle that matched the description given to them. They attempted to pull the vehicle over when it sped away prompting a pursuit. The pursuit ended when the vehicle stopped on northbound 5 near Cristianitos.

Police say the person in the car is armed and dangerous. Orange County SWAT has been called to the situation to assist.

CalTrans says all lanes have been reopened.
