Saint Archer will air ad for its new beer during Sunday's Super Bowl LIV

Molson Coors said it's the largest investment it has made for an ad during the Super Bowl since 2009.

SAN DIEGO — America's Finest City is making a cameo in this year's Super Bowl commercials.

San Diego-based craft beer company Saint Archer Brewing Company will have a 30 second ad that airs sometime around halftime, but what really has people talking is that it was mostly filmed in Ocean Beach.

It features the iconic ocean beach back drop, professional skater and Saint Archer Brewing founding partner, Paul Rodriguez - or "P-Rod" - as he skates his way around OB looking for the new "Gold" lager.

“I think it’s really cool they made a super bowl commercial in Ocean Beach,” said a customer at Sea Trader Liquor that’s seen in the commercial.

Saint Archer started in San Diego in 2013 and was bought by Molson Coors in 2015. It launched the Saint Archer Gold, a low-calorie beer on Sunday.

“It's something that we have always dreamed of and to finally be here is pretty surreal,” said Kylie Carnes, Saint Archer Brewing Co. Creative Director.

Eden Carter saw them filming two weeks ago and kept seeing a guy, Rodriguez, skating by their house. 

“I didn’t know at all, they told us a beer commercial and we didn’t know what it would be for," he said.

She and her sister Ashley Carter had no idea it would be a commercial on the most watched television event of the year.

“This is really exciting to see our little OB town all of the sudden will be in the Super Bowl, that is really cool for me to see,” said Ashley Carter.

Many are walking and stopping in their tracks to take in the moment.... The County of San Diego - Government administration building on the Embarcadero is lit in purple and gold to remember Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi and the 7 others who died.

Saint Archer said for naming rights reasons it couldn’t disclose the store names featured in the commercial, but if you skate along with Rodriguez whistling to Guns N Roses ‘Patience’ you will recognize what looks to be: Sea Trader Liquor, the view down the hill on Newport Avenue, and Voltaire Coin Laundry. Rodriguez patiently skates to Stumps Family Marketplace looking for Gold and finds it in Golden Hill.

“We are deeply rooted in the skate and surf communities and OB is iconic for surf and skate,” said Carnes.

The ad will air sometime around the halftime show and in 70 markets across the nation, including San Diego.

Saint Archer wouldn’t disclose the cost for the thirty second spot but the average national 30 second spot during Super Bowl LIV is $5.6 million. Molson Coors said it's the largest investment it has made for an ad during the Super Bowl since 2009. 

The Super Bowl will air this Sunday.
