Council works to end suicide in San Diego

The number of suicides here in San Diego is up, and it's a leading cause of death in our county.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The number of suicides here in San Diego is up, and it's a leading cause of death in our county.

According to a 2014 report by the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Council, there were 441 suicides in 2013. That's up from 413 the year before.

The council wants everyone to know that suicide is preventable, and is encouraging people to know the signs.

"If they're coming across somewhat listless, they look like they're lost energy or interest in their prior activities, perhaps have lost their appetite, having trouble sleeping, don't go out on outings with their friends, begin to isolate themselves," behavioral health director Alfredo Aguirre said.

The county has a number of suicide prevention resources available.
