Officials: Mental illness possible factor in Palomar College arrest

Posted: Updated:

SAN MARCOS (CNS) - A young man who called police and stated another man had shot his cousin with an AK-47 in Escondido was arrested at Palomar College Tuesday in an apparent suicide-by-cop attempt.

Luis Bolanos, 23, made a 911 call, saying a relative had been shot shortly before 6:30 a.m., but no victim was ever found, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Department officials.

Bolanos told authorities he had a pistol and was headed to Palomar College, where he intended to get into a shootout with deputies, sheriff's Sgt. Paul Michalke said.

Michalke said Bolanos gave authorities his own description, including what clothes he was wearing and his location at 1140 W. Mission Road.

The campus, already closed for winter break, was sealed off as deputies searched for Bolanos, who was arrested without a struggle near the western edge of the campus, Michalke said.

He had a loaded, small-caliber handgun, sheriff's officials said.

No one on the campus was injured, according to Michalke.

Mental illness may be a factor, according to the sergeant.

Bolanos was booked into Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a loaded firearm on the grounds of a university or college, according to jail records. No information was made available about the felony conviction.

He was scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Friday, records showed.
