1 dead, 1 in custody after neighbors argue

Posted: Updated:

ALPINE (CNS) - The shooting death of a 56 year-old man in the Ma Tar Awa Campground in Alpine was the result of an argument with his 73 year-old neighbor, who was taken into custody, a San Diego County sheriff's lieutenant said Monday.

It happened about 4:10 p.m. Sunday at the campground at 25 Browns Rd., said San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Glenn Giannantonio of the Homicide Detail.

"Leland Clyde got into an argument with his neighbor, Jock Martin in the Ma Tar Awa Campground," Giannantonio said. "During the argument Clyde produced a shotgun and shot Martin. Clyde went back into his trailer and retrieved more shotgun rounds. Martin's brother came out of his trailer after hearing the shots and Clyde pointed the shotgun at him. The brother ran away and called for help."

A sheriff's helicopter arrived at the scene, the lieutenant said, and Clyde was ordered over the helicopter's public address system to lie on the ground.

"Patrol deputies arrived on scene and Martin was pronounced dead. Clyde was taken into custody on suspicion of murder," Giannantonio said.

The crime lab and detectives from the Homicide Detail and the Alpine Sheriff's Substation were investigating, he said.

Anyone with information about this case was asked to contact homicide detectives at (858) 974-2321 and anonymous tips may be called in to (888) 580-8477, sheriff's officials said
