Some local schools close early due to heatwave

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Several schools in the National City School District will be dismissed early Tuesday through Friday because of soaring temperatures.

As San Diegans battle a heatwave through the rest of this week, at least eight schools will let out early due to lack of air conditioning and for safety reasons.

Temperatures could reach the 100 degree mark by Tuesday and then again Thursday.

The District will ensure kids and staff have water bottles. Gym classes are cancelled and children must stay away from metal playground equipment.

This situation is something school teachers dealt with in September 2013 when the extremely hot weather caused illness.

"I have kids with headaches and kids who have to vomit so they're heading to the bathrooms," one teacher said.

The following schools have an adjusted schedule this week:

- Ira Harbison, Las Palmas, Lincoln Acres and John Otis will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m.

- Central, El Toyon, Kimball and Olivewood will be let out at 1:25 p.m.

- Palmer Way and Rancho de la Nacion will have regular schedules, because the schools have air conditioning.

If you have any questions, you’re urged to check with your school for additional information or changes.
