SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - County of San Diego Animal Services has a new tool to help reunite lost dogs with their owners.

It's a free app called "Finding Rover" and it uses facial recognition technology to match pet pictures with the dogs at county animal shelters.

All an owner has to do is upload a photo and the app shows possible matches within seconds.

"Even if they have a picture on their phone right now. They can take that photo and load it to "Finding Rover" right now. That will scan and if we have that dog in our shelter, it's going to hit a match," said Daniel Desousa, County Department of Animal Services.

County animal services is the first shelter in the nation to use the facial recognition technology.
