Miramar Marine arrested in drunken Colorado rampage

Posted: Updated:

(CBS 8) - A Miramar Marine is in big trouble, accused of going on a drunken rampage in Colorado.

Lance Corporal Kenneth Jones remembers leaving a bar and waking up in a hospital in handcuffs. But what happened in between, the Miramar-based Marine told police he doesn't remember.

It happened around 2 a.m. Saturday morning while Jones was on a break from Osprey training in Durango, Colo. LeeAnn Craig says Jones broke into her kennel and let a dozen dogs run away onto a busy highway.

"It was like an inch of glass in places on the floor and the kennels were in disarray, pulled apart, doors open," Craig said.

Police noticed the dogs running around and called animal control, who started rounding up the pets. That's when officers heard a noise next door at a used car dealership and noticed vehicle after vehicle with broken windows. But Jones' alleged rampage didn't stop there.

"Then he broke the front door, the glass, and gained access to the front and broke copiers, computers -- vandalized the building," the dealership's owner said.

He says Jones was in the process of lighting a calendar on fire when police caught him.

"If they wouldn't have been there, caught him on time, he would have burned the building down and caught vehicles on fire -- a mess," he said.

He says his dealership sustained at least $15,000 damage. Craig says hers is at least another $5,000.

Jones is expected to face several felony charges, including arson, criminal mischief and criminal tampering for letting the dogs out.

"I would hope he gets some help. I don't know if it's alcohol or underlying issues he's dealing with," Craig said.

Jones has never served in combat, so police doubt he suffers from PTSD. They are now waiting for the results from drug tests.

Officials at Miramar say they'll let civilian authorities do their investigation before they decide if they'll also take action.
