SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - City Council President Todd Gloria is renewing his call to raise the minimum wage after a similar measure was approved in Seattle.

Workers there will soon earn $15 an hour.

Here in San Diego, Gloria is proposing a ballot initiative that, if approved, would increase the minimum wage to $13.09 by 2017.

He says there's still a long way to go.

“We're not there yet, we still have a number of months before the council needs to take any specific action, but it's my hope that between now and then, that we can forge some kind of consensus,” said Gloria. “This is not impossible."

Right now, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour -- President Obama wants it raised to $10.10.
