CAMP PENDLETON (CBS 8) - A Camp Pendleton Marine received a Bronze Star for heroism Monday almost two years after he was killed in combat in Afghanistan.
The family of Lance Corporal Steven Stevens accepted the prestigious award today at Camp Pendleton. Stevens was 23 years old when he died in 2012 as he guided his squad through enemy fire.
"So much joy and pride that he received everything that he got because he'd go beyond the call for anyone. And it just... I'm glad that he finally got what was coming," friend Corporal Xavier Irizarry said.
Stevens' wife accepted the award and held their son, who Stevens never met. He was born eight days after his father's deployment.
