SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – The 40th anniversary of San Diego Pride kicked off in the Gaslamp Quarter Wednesday.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer joined members of the Gaslamp Quarter Association and San Diego LGBT Pride to hoist two rainbow flags over Fifth Avenue. The flags are among 124 that will wave over downtown streets.

The mayor also announced the theme for this year's pride event – "Reflections of Pride."

"Not only should we reflect on the struggles of the LGBT heroes, but we should celebrate the achievements of our LGBT community," Faulconer said.

The first gay pride event in San Diego was held in 1974, and included a march from downtown to Balboa Park.
