SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Homicide detectives were on the scene of an officer-involved shooting in the Midway District overnight.

San Diego police responded to the 3700 block of Riley Street at Hancock Street in the Midway District after someone called 911 just after midnight with reports of a man with a knife inside the Hi-Lite Adult Video and Bookstore, threatening the bookstore clerk.

Details in this case are still developing, however the information known is a 42-year-old man is dead, after being shot in the alley after he allegedly threatened an overnight clerk inside the Hi-Lite Adult Video and Book Store. After the shooting, the suspect was rushed to UCSD Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. He suffered at least one gunshot wound.

Chris Rapata, the manager of the Hi-Lite Adult Video & Bookstore, told CBS News 8 what her employee witnessed before calling 911:

"He went outside to take a smoke break and he saw someone in the back lot that we share with the Body Shop, with a knife exposed waving it around mumbling saying I'm going to kill somebody, I'm going to kill my family."

Rapata believes the man may have been homeless and said he was not a regular customer.

The suspect was shot in the torso. As of this report, it's not clear if the man lunged at the officer or pulled out a knife.

"Officers arrived in two minutes. Found the suspect just outside the store. Gave the suspect verbal commands the suspect did not comply and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” said Captain David Nisleit with the San Diego Police Department.

There are several surveillance cameras inside the bookstore that shares a building with the Body Shop strip club. A number of cameras aimed at the alleyway may have captured the shooting.

Part of the evidence includes the man's possessions. There was a red back pack that was found in the alleyway along with a pair of shoes and other pieces of clothing.

"He did threaten the clerk with a knife and the clerk felt like he was going to be killed," said David Nisleit with the San Diego Police Department.

Police say the suspect kept advancing toward the officer, who is a 27-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department. He is now on administrative leave.

The suspect's identity hasn't been released.
