SAN DIEGO (AP) - A former San Diego County man who opposed death penalty delays and feared his daughter's killer would outlive him was right.
Friends tell the North County Times that 88-year-old George Cullins died last Tuesday from injuries suffered in an October car crash. His wife remains hospitalized.
The couple moved to Texas a few years ago and were injured while visiting California.
In 1984 Cullins' adopted daughter, 24-year-old Janette Cullins, was strangled and stuffed in a closet of her Pacific Beach home.
Dean Carter was convicted. He's been on death row since 1990 and has a separate death sentence for killing three Los Angeles women. He's won dozens of delays.
Over the years, Cullins wrote letters and editorial columns criticizing such delays and often said he feared he'd die before Carter.
