ESCONDIDO (CNS) - An Escondido man remained jailed Monday for allegedly causing a fiery crash that killed an 18-year-old man, and fleeing.

Juan Carlos Carrillo, 20, of Escondido, was arrested about 5:30 p.m. Sunday in connection with the crash that killed Miguel Angel Rojas, 18, also of Escondido, said police Officer S. Walters. Carrillo was charged with felony hit and run, and driving without a license.

The crash happened at approximately 2:15 a.m., Sunday, when Carrillo's eastbound 1995 Lexus ES300 collided with a Dodge Caravan at Washington Avenue and Elmwood Drive, Walters said.

Carrillo and two passengers ran from the crash, leaving the wrecked Lexus behind, the Escondido officer said.

The minivan was completely engulfed in flames immediately after the crash, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. Rojas died from smoke inhalation and burns sustained in the crash and was declared dead at the scene.
