Feds nab nearly a ton of pot at North County beach

A boat dropped a green load at Dog Beach at Del Mar Sunday, and federal agents confiscated 1,500 to 2,000 pounds of marijuana found in suspicious vehicles.

DEL MAR (CNS) - U.S. Border Patrol agents foiled a maritime marijuana-smuggling attempt at a Del Mar beach over the weekend, arresting two suspected traffickers and seizing nearly a ton of marijuana, the federal agency reported Monday.

About 3 a.m. Sunday, Border Patrol personnel assigned to coastal enforcement approached a pair of men standing outside a 2008 Chevrolet box truck and a 1998 Dodge pickup parked near Dog Beach. The officers then spotted bundles of what turned out to be marijuana on a path near the vehicles.

A search of the area revealed dozens of additional packages of marijuana under a pier and inside the box truck. In all, agents recovered 155 bundles with a total weight of 1,976 pounds and an estimated street worth of almost $3 million.

The suspects, U.S. citizens whose names were not released, were arrested and turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel along with the confiscated cannabis and the seized trucks.
