Suspicious backpack found in Emerald Hills park rendered safe

The all-clear has been given in Emerald Hills after police investigated a report of a suspicious backpack Saturday afternoon.

EMERALD HILLS (CBS 8) - The Metro Arson Strike Team Bomb Squad was called out to a local park Saturday after someone left what looked like a suspicious backpack there.

The backpack was found just before 2 p.m. at Emerald Hills park. Officials say a man was spotted leaving the backpack on top of a trash can and then drive off in a car.

That's when witnesses contacted authorities because of the suspicious appearance of the backpack.

"The way it was placed and based on witness statements, they observed the bag and it had a padlock on top of the bag closing the zippers," said San Diego Bomb Squad Capt. Jeff Ring.

Two robots were brought in to check out the backpack. All that was found inside were harmless personal items.
