SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - When it comes to serving up sandwiches in his modest cafe, Melford Wilson thinks way outside the bun.
"We wanted to be a new sandwich that kind of represents San Diego," Melford said.
So all sandwiches at Waffle Burger are, you guessed it, served on a waffle.
"You can get it on buttermilk, multi-grain, or a cinnamon waffle," Melford said.
The waffles here are grilled.
"Watch the texture of these waffles after we do them. The way we do them is amazing," Melford said.
The original Waffle Burger comes with seasoned ground beef served with grilled bell peppers and onions, and is served on a buttermilk waffle.
There's no waffling at Waffle Burger. Anything and everything goes -- chicken, turkey, eggs, bacon, fried pastrami, the kitchen sink -- if you can pile it on a waffle, it's on the menu.
Located on Imperial Avenue just off Euclid Avenue, Melford not only wants to change the way you look at a Sandwich. The Lincoln High alum wants to change the way you view his neighborhood.
"People don't know where we are, are kind of apprehensive to come into this area, but we are trying to reinvent it and give them a real positive reason to come back in this community," he said.
At Waffle Burger, they are out to prove that sandwiches are a lot like neighborhoods. You don't want to stereotype either one of them.
