Animal mini-camps all about maximizing love for nature

Some kids who had the day off from school spent their free time learning all about animals.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Some kids who had the day off from school spent their free time learning all about animals.

They took part in a special animal adventure mini-camp put on by the San Diego Humane Society at the Gaines Street shelter.

Gandolf the guinea pig was a big hit with the kids at the adventure camp, which is an offshoot of the week-long program.

"The lessons that the kids learn are to meet with the animals, interact with animals, all geared toward how to care and how to have respect for animals," San Diego Humane Society spokeswoman Kelli Schry said.

Some of the kids didn't have any pets, and the camp gave them a chance to interact with animals. While most did have pets, none had as many as John Carlos' 14 homing pigeons, 2 dogs and a bearded dragon.

"It's important not to go running around animals and being crazy because they can use a defense because they can get scared and think you're going to do something to them," he said.

The camp teaches the basics.

"It's helping me to learn how to treat pets and not get them scared, and get them to like you," one child said.
