SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A 63-year-old motorcyclist is dead after he and a San Diego police cruiser collided in Claremont Mesa Monday night.

The fatal accident happened around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Balboa Avenue and Mt. Everest Boulevard near Genesee Avenue.

Witnesses said the police officer was heading west on Balboa Avenue when he activated his lights and made a U-Turn at the intersection.

"Witnesses reported the motorcycle went down prior to hitting the police vehicle and applied his brakes and went to ground," said SDPD Lt. Mark Bennett.

Investigators said the officer was responding to call for a hit-and-run suspect and had a red light and the motorcyclist had a green light.

"Officer had lights and sirens on as he went through the intersection," said Bennett.

Witnesses told CBS News 8 they saw a motorcyclist doing wheelies moments before the crash but it is unclear if that is the same rider.

A neighbor living at the corner heard the crash and came out to help.

"I realized cops responded really fast to it, I was like there already is a cop here," said Chris Kato.

He didn't realize an officer was involved until he spoke to witnesses.

Police are still working to determine who is a fault. Per a special request SDPD called on CHP to investigate since it involves an SDPD officer.

Lt. Bennett said the commanding officer will determine if the officer involved will stay on duty during the investigation. He was not injured in the crash.

The victim was transported to Mercy Scripps where he died. The medical examiner will release the victim's name once all family is notified.

The suspect in the hit-and-run call the officer was responding to was arrested.
