New beetle threatening San Diego trees

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A beetle wiping out crops in Los Angeles and Orange County has been confirmed in San Diego County.

The polyphagous shot-hole borer beetle is known to devastate more than 250 tree species including avocado orchards.

An arborist confirmed a case where this beetle was found in a sycamore in an El Cajon yard.

In this video report, CBS 8's Abbie Alford explains why there is not a solution to control the deadly fungus the beetle uses as a food source.

To report a suspicious tree contact the San Diego County Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures at the San Diego office at 858-694-2739 or the North County office at 760-752-4700.
