Climbers honor victims of 9/11

About a thousand San Diegans laced up their sneakers Sunday with a promise to never forget the victims of September 11.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - About a thousand San Diegans laced up their sneakers Sunday with a promise to never forget the victims of September 11.

It was part of the annual 9/11 Stair Climb at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront.

Participants climbed the hotel's inside stairs three times for a total of 110 floors -- the same number as in the twin towers.

Several firefighters even made the ascend in their entire gear.

"Just to remember that the pain and the difficulty we'll feel today is nothing compared to what those men and women did the day of 9/11," Riverside County Fire Department Captain John Janssen, said.

The climb raises money for three charities that help firefighters and their families.
