SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Five golfers qualified Monday for a chance to win the grand prize in the $1 Million Hole-in-One Shootout, a fundraiser for the Holiday Bowl, event organizers said.
Over the next two weeks, golfers at the Stadium Golf Center will try to hit a hole-in-one, which will get them a spot in the finals, which are scheduled for Sept. 22. Qualifying began Monday at the facility near Qualcomm Stadium.
Whoever gets a hole-in-one in the finals wins $1 million -- but it hasn't happened over the course of the event's first 25 years. The closest anyone has come was in 2002 -- 2 feet 8 inches.
Last year, Jacobe Washburn of San Diego won the finals by striking a ball that landed closest to the pin -- 28 feet, 11 inches away at the 18th hole of the Carlton Oaks Golf Course in Santee. Washburn, whose nephew came in fourth, received two round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines.
