OCEANSIDE (CNS) - An early morning fire at an Oceanside a motor repair shop sent a firefighter to a hospital and caused about $1 million in damage to that business, a neighboring one and an attached apartment.

Fire crews were dispatched shortly after 2:30 a.m. to 1119 S. Cleveland St. They found flames coming from the commercial business and its owner's upstairs residence, according to Battalion Chief Felipe Rodriguez of the Oceanside Fire Department.

About 40 firefighters from Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista had the blaze under control in about 45 minutes, but remained on scene for several hours working to fully extinguish it, Rodriguez said.

The fire burned through the roof and destroyed the majority of its contents, but firefighters were able to save office equipment and records, Rodriguez said. The residents' home was also spared.

An adjoining business was damaged because the fire spread through one of its exterior walls, he said.

The fire caused about $1 million in damage to the structure and the equipment, Rodriguez said. Its cause remained under investigation.

One firefighter sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a hospital before being released, Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said two adult residents managed to safely exit the building as firefighters were searching the building. Both displaced residents were planning to stay with family members.
